Hello, I'm Debapriya, a dedicated researcher with a passion for exploring the intricate dynamics of urban innovation, the interface between communities and infrastructure, and the transformative power of human practices. I am a Lecturer in Architecture associated with the PRAXXIS, a feminist Atelier.
I was a Research Associate on the 'Place-based innovation strategies and entrepreneurial ecosystems' project. My work revolves around unravelling the profound impact of Innovation Districts in city regions and their far-reaching implications. My other ongoing project involves the development of a methodological toolkit aimed at reimagining urban public realms, often referred to as the 'ground zone.' This endeavour seeks to lay the groundwork for future cities, where the intersection of innovation and urban spaces will play a pivotal role. Previously, I won the prestigious ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship award based at The University of Manchester. During this time, my research focused on Kumartuli, an inner-city neighbourhood in Kolkata, India. Specifically, I delved into the role of infrastructure in shaping and transforming the age-old practices of idol-making in this vibrant community. Before re-joining the University of Manchester, I served as a Research Associate at the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, where I collaborated with Cardiff University, where I researched on understanding governance and livelihoods in South Asian borders.
My research expertise spans a broad spectrum, including informal practices, livelihoods, the intricate interplay between humans and infrastructure, and sustainable urban transitions. My particular focus lies in shedding light on the experiences of marginalized communities in the Global South, where the potential for positive change is immense.
I hold a PhD in Architecture and Urban Studies from The University of Manchester, where I conducted in-depth research into the transformation of idol-crafting practices in Kolkata. Following my Bachelor of Architecture degree, I completed master’s degree in City Planning at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, supported by a Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Government of India scholarship.
I'm thrilled to share my research journey with you through this platform. Feel free to explore my work, insights, and discoveries as we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of urban innovation and transformation.
Thank you for visiting, and I look forward to connecting and sharing ideas with fellow enthusiasts, scholars, and anyone interested in the exciting realm of urban studies.
