Durga Puja is one of the most worshipped festivals in Kolkata, West Bengal. The festival celebrates the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. Recently, the festival was inscribed as one of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.
The Kumartuli neighbourhood in Kolkata is home to the world's largest crafting community of idol-makers. These artists work tirelessly throughout the year to create elaborate, ritually worshipped idols during Durga Puja celebrations.
In my book, I explore the religious, cultural, and economic implications of Durga Puja and the ongoing changes in the crafting community. I also discuss the challenges the Kumartuli community faces in the face of changing consumer patterns.
Stay tuned as I provide insights into the subsequent chapters, each offering a unique perspective on the dynamic intersection of heritage, community, and urban transformation revolving around the Durga Puja festival.
Let the countdown to October 6th begin! 🎉
